The Step into Highways programme is designed to provide individuals with a practical and engaging introduction to the highways industry, helping to raise awareness of the career opportunities available within the sector. The initiative supports VolkerHighways’ commitment to addressing the challenges of an ageing workforce by attracting new talent and inspiring people to consider a long-term career in highways.
The programme is delivered in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), local colleges and other educational institutions which help identify and source suitable candidates who may benefit from gaining first-hand experience of the industry. By working closely with these partners, we can connect with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and provide them with valuable insight into career pathways they may not have previously considered.
Each session includes a 2 - 3 hour depot-based taster experience, offering participants a behind-the-scenes look at our operations. During the session, members of the team share their personal career journeys, discuss the wide variety of roles available across the business, and explain how our work contributes to maintaining and improving vital highway networks. The programme also involves a guided depot tour, where attendees can observe demonstrations of specialist tools, equipment and vehicles.
Crucially, the programme helps individuals gain an understanding of the skills, qualifications and development opportunities available within the sector and business.
The programme forms part of VolkerHighways’ wider commitment to skills development, social value and future talent attraction. It complements our broader careers initiatives, including work experience opportunities, engagement with schools and colleges, and our growing apprenticeship programme.
