Safer crossings for cyclists and pedestrians at revamped Luton road junction
A new cycling-friendly junction has been implemented as part of Luton Council’s ongoing work to make it safer and easier for people to travel actively around the town.
The crossroads of New Bedford Road, Kingsdown Avenue and Austin Road has been turned into a CYCLOPS (Cycle Optimised Protected Signals) style of junction, the first of its kind in Luton.
The new configuration allows cyclists and pedestrians to simultaneously cross all arms of the junction at the same time, segregated from each other and also safely protected from vehicles.
If the layout proves successful, it could pave the way for more CYCLOPS-style junctions to be introduced at other key locations in the town where appropriate.
New Bedford Road is a priority route identified in the council’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which sets out the long-term vision for a connected, town-wide network of safe and accessible walking and cycling routes.
The LCWIP highlights the importance of creating joined-up infrastructure that encourages more people to choose sustainable travel for everyday journeys.
Works have included:
- Enhanced pedestrian and cyclist facilities for safer, more accessible active travel routes
- Complete traffic signal replacement, removing obsolete equipment and improving reliability
- Structural protection to increase cover over the River Lea culvert
- Future‑proofing infrastructure, including new ducting to upgrade HV network
- Road closure, diversions and lane closures managed by VolkerTraffic management
“Improving this junction is an important step in making cycling and walking safer and more attractive options for residents. We know New Bedford Road is a busy and well-used route, so it’s vital we get the balance right for all road users. This junction improvement gives us the opportunity to see how the new layout works in practice and to listen to feedback from the community. Encouraging more active travel not only helps us tackle congestion and improve air quality, but also supports our wider ambitions to create a healthier, more sustainable town.”
