The improvements, on behalf of The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, include changed traffic priorities at two junctions and the introduction of raised ‘table’ features to better control traffic along Stovell Road and Barry Avenue, between the Royal Windsor Way underpass and the railway arches.

At the leisure centre, the team modified the main car park entrance/egress with a lockable height barrier and closed off the old entrance.

With sustainable travel at the heart of the scheme, VolkerHighways widened footways, for improved pedestrian accessibility. Cycle facilities were also widened under the adjacent railway arches, accommodating larger bikes. The team also realigned crossing points to provide more direct pedestrian access.   

The scheme encourages residents to consider healthier lifestyles by making walking and cycling more practical and attractive for everyday journeys between the town centre, residential areas and leisure centre. The enhancements aim to remove an element of traffic away from the busy town centre.

The works were delivered as part of VolkerHighways’ highway term maintenance contract with The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead. 

The scheme also drew upon VolkerHighways’ traffic management division’s expertise for site traffic management control.
