Early careers

Whichever route you join us by, you will be offered ongoing opportunities to develop professionally and personally throughout your career, with full support at every stage.

You will gain valuable on site experience and work closely with a site manager / mentor, who will provide you with day to day support, feedback, advice and guidance on working practices, training and any highways maintenance and construction matters.

Apprenticeship scheme

With government and businesses recognising the value of modern day apprenticeships, many of our professionals are starting their careers from an apprenticeship base. We at VolkerHighways understand the value of investing in our future workforce and run an apprentice scheme for highways and lighting operatives across our highways and lighting maintenance contracts, in London and the South East.

Our apprentices work alongside experienced staff to gain construction specific skills as well as receiving training towards a nationally recognised qualification; through a formal college programme.

Graduate programmes

In conjunction with the other VolkerWessels UK business units we offer graduate opportunities to individuals with enthusiasm, initiative and ambition; to become part of our team, building relationships and contributing to a highly successful and profitable business.

Our graduate programme post degree is usually three years in duration, leads to a professional qualification with the ICE or CIHT and aims to develop skills to make future leaders within the business. We recruit graduates on their potential and give them the opportunity to develop in their role, within a structured framework programme.

Work placements and experience

VolkerHighways provides placements and work experience, for residents who live locally to our sites and offices, ranging from administrative positions to on-site roles.

Our placement programme provides students with the opportunity to build on their technical knowledge within a site environment. Throughout the placement, we ensure students receive regular feedback and, depending on outcome, offer students the opportunity to join us; once they have completed their studies.
