Meet some of our people and find out what they have to say about the opportunities and personal experiences of being a VolkerHighways employee.
Position: Lighting Preconstruction Manager
James sits within VolkerHighways’ lighting team and has been with the business since April 2007.
Prior to joining VolkerHighways, he worked for a variety of different companies within the construction industry, including Associated Asphalt and Mowlem, which was later bought by Carillion. He then joined Mews, which joined with Gabriel, Crowley and the highways division of VolkerFitzpatrick in 2009, to become VolkerHighways.
James enjoys the close-knit camaraderie of following a career in the lighting term maintenance sector.
“The thing I most enjoy about my work is the people I get to work with. Lighting is the kind of industry where everyone knows everyone, which always helps to create a good atmosphere when working with different teams and suppliers.”
As an operative on VolkerHighways’ West Berkshire contract, George takes part in a wide variety of work, including surfacing, term maintenance and traffic management. No two days are ever the same.
With a background in mechanics, he came to the business with a lot of practical skills but relatively little industry experience. Seeing his potential, VolkerHighways supported George’s training for his role.
George now leads a three-man gang on-site, which has allowed him to learn how different people work and develop his leadership skills.
“I like working with the West Berkshire team - it’s a good group of people here. This is the first depot I’ve worked at and it has a really nice atmosphere. All the office staff and operatives get on really well and I always feel comfortable talking to my supervisor about any suggestions or ideas I might have.”
Position: Operations Manager
Kevin joined VolkerHighways in July 2016, after thirty-one years in the highway maintenance sector. Spending time working at Balfour Beatty and Amey, Kevin worked his way up from operative roles to supervisor and site agent. He undertook training and development in a range of disciplines and now holds the position of operations manager, for VolkerHighways’ Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead contract.
“The thing I enjoy about this job, is the variety. No two days are ever the same, which keeps it interesting. What we do really makes a difference to the local community and it’s very satisfying to see the positive effects of our work.
VolkerHighways has a really friendly atmosphere. You always feel valued and the senior team are very approachable, which is important in a business like ours.”
