Asphalt preservation is a sustainable and cost-effective solution to improve roads, by sealing the surface layer, extending the resilience and performance of a road surface.

When compared to conventional warm mix resurfacing, the asphalt preservation programme in Wokingham achieved 396.8tco2e savings. This equals approximately 90% carbon saving across the entire programme.

The programme has covered all types of roads, with its largest schemes being along the A321/320 Finchampstead Road and A4 New Bath Road where the business completed over 10,000m2 at each location of asphalt preservation solution.

Kunle Kolaru, Operations Director for VolkerHighways, said: “Asphalt preservation is another solution that is being used to keep our network running, particularly as we head towards the winter season, which is harsh on our roads. It is much lower in carbon and more cost-effective, compared to conventional resurfacing methods. The solution used is expected to extend the life of the surface for three to five years.”
