VolkerHighways in the heart of the West End

VolkerHighways has completed the hard and soft landscaping of the prestigious development of St. James's Gateway in central London, a scheme that involved the consolidation of seven buildings into commercial, retail and residential space, as well as public realm enhancements.

The £540,000 contract, which consisted of the installation of yorkstone footways and granite set carriageways, is part of a wider scheme to regenerate the area to attract new high-end businesses.

In order to preserve some of the historic features of the area, VolkerHighways undertook the delicate restoration and re-installation of 130 year old listed gas lamps in Eagle Place. This ensured the works remained sensitive to the location, which is a conservation area.

Adrian Spencer, VolkerHighways contracts manager, said:  "We are delighted to have been involved in another high profile scheme in London, which will see the area regenerated to reflect modern London, whilst preserving the historic architecture that makes London the place it is.  Our teams know London well and this sort of project is what we do best; collaborating on large redevelopment programmes, sensitively restoring parts of the city and dealing with the general public and commuters as they pass close to our work.

"As with any central London project and any busy commercial area, you are always going to have that extra challenge of handling big crowds of people. We have a lot of experience with this and the team knows exactly what safety measures need to be in place to ensure a smooth and hazard free job."
