A team of 23 volunteers, including Stewart Mackay, contract supervisor at VolkerHighways, Stuart MacLean, agent at VolkerFitzpatrick and Mark Williamson, project manager at VolkerFitzpatrick, took part in Love Luton's remembrance bike ride from Luton to Flanders, Belgium. The sponsored remembrance ride began on Saturday 2nd August 2014 and was in aid of The Royal British Legion charity.
Departing from the War memorial at Luton Town Hall on Saturday morning, the route took the team through central London and onto Rochester where they spent their first overnight stay. Sunday morning saw the bikers' cycle to the ferry with the day finishing in Dunkirk, France. The team finished the remembrance ride on the 4th August 2014 arriving at the Battlefields in Flanders coinciding with the 100th anniversary of when Great Britain declared war on August 4th 1914.
The bike ride proved challenging at times being 200 miles long, however the warm sunshine throughout the weekend helped make the challenge much more enjoyable.
Mark Williamson said: "We are glad to say that we completed the remembrance ride to Flanders. Amongst new friends it was a surprisingly enjoyable bike ride with a sobering, enlightening conclusion.
"The war cemeteries are poignant, tranquil and dignified and in visiting three of the many hundreds, you only just start to understand the mind-numbing scale of the waste of life. We are extremely proud to have been able to contribute to the remembrance of all of those lives lost."
VolkerHighways and VolkerFitzpatrick employees have raised over £2000 so far.
