In partnership with Luton Council, VolkerHighways invited local school children from Lady Zia Wernher School, a community special school, to name our new five gritting vehicles. The gritters are used to keep the highway network moving across Luton during the winter months, tackling snow and ice, to help keep the public safe.
After receiving some imaginative entries, Gerard McCleave, Corporate Director for Inclusive Economy at Luton Council chose his five favourites:
- Grainy the Gritter
- Grit & Go
- Gruzzle
- Ice Fairy
- Snow Angel
The winning names have been printed on the front of VolkerHighways’ gritters. Each winner received a goody bag containing a mini gritter toy, a framed picture of their named gritter, a certificate and a Smyths toys voucher.
Gerard presented the winners during a visit with gritter ‘Snow Angel’ while it was off duty. The children got the chance to sit in the gritter and were delighted to meet our mascot, Kerby the Cone.
Matt Joel, Project Manager for VolkerHighways, said: “On behalf of the team at Luton, we found the visit to Lady Zia Wernher School extremely rewarding. It was brilliant to see the children who were very pleased to see Kerby and sit in one of our big gritting lorries.”
