Following the success of our mini cycleway at Alice Park, designed to help young cyclists learn vital road safety skills, VolkerHighways’ Bath & North East Somerset contract is proud to have supported the installation of a new cycleway at Connection Day Centre in Writhlington.
The centre provides essential support to adults with learning disabilities, helping them build confidence, develop life skills, and access health and wellbeing opportunities.
Every Thursday, the team runs outdoor sessions focused on cycling and road safety, encouraging independence and active living.
Previously, staff marked out temporary road layouts with chalk which lacked durability and consistency. Inspired by the success of Alice Park, the centre reached out to us for support in creating a more permanent solution.
Thanks to the generosity of our supply chain partner F1 Lining, who volunteered their time and services, the centre now has a fully lined, realistic cycleway. It mirrors real road markings, offering a safer, more effective way for users to build confidence before venturing onto actual roads.
Charlie Cox, Project Manager for VolkerHighways, said: “It was a privilege to support Connection Day Centre with their cycleway initiative. While road safety education often focuses on children, this experience has broadened our perspective— highlighting the importance of inclusive access to these essential skills for adults with learning disabilities.”
“It’s great to see the cycle track in place, it looks fantastic. Thank you so much to everyone at VolkerHighways and F1 Lining who made it happen. It is much appreciated and will be enjoyed by a lot of people we support.”
