Encouraging the next generation of highways professionals

Young people from across Bath and North East Somerset, including participants supported through the council's Youth Guarantee, have been given a behind-the-scenes insight into careers in the highways sector.

Step into Highways

VolkerHighways and Bath & North East Somerset Council joined forces to host a series of 'Step into Highways' events at our depot in Clutton, helping young people learn about the wide range of opportunities available in maintaining and improving the region's road network.

Young people had the chance to meet highways professionals, hear first-hand accounts of working in the industry and explore potential career pathways. They also got up close to specialist vehicles and equipment and gained a better understanding of the skills needed to keep local communities connected and safe.

The events were supported by the council's Livewell B&NES Youth Guarantee, which helps young people aged 16 to 21 who are not in education, employment or training take their next step towards work, training or further education.

The events support VolkerHighways’ and the council’s commitment to developing skills, creating employment opportunities and encouraging more people from a broad range of backgrounds to consider careers in highways and infrastructure.

“Maintaining and improving our roads and transport network relies on a skilled and dedicated workforce. This event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the variety of rewarding careers available in highways and engineering, while helping people understand the important role these services play in supporting local communities. It’s been great to work alongside VolkerHighways to encourage local people to explore opportunities within the sector and consider a career they may not previously have thought about."

Councillor Lucy Hodge Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport Delivery

"The Step into Highways programme is all about opening doors and demonstrating the wide range of opportunities that exist within our industry. We want to help inspire future talent and support the long-term sustainability of the highways workforce and were delighted to welcome participants from across Bath and North East Somerset.”
