The international campaign, started in 1984 by The Green Organisation, a non-profit group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world aims to find the greenest companies, councils and communities.

The Hackney contract have put in place a number of measures that improve the enviornmental sustainability of their sites. The team regularly use bicycles to travel between sites (approximately 1,500 miles) and this has resulted in a saving of 0.46tCO2e. Less than 1% of waste from sites on the contract has been sent to landfill and the site offices utilise 'ecocabins' with solar cells installed, helping them save around 5,265 litres of diesel per year, equating to 13.6 tCO2e.

VolkerHighways will be presented with their Green Apple award for Environmental Best Practice at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on 16 November 2016.

The Green Apple Awards are supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
