Kerby awards Hilltop Primary School Road Safety Week competition winner
As part of Road Safety Week back in November, VolkerHighways’ Medway highways term maintenance contract ran a competition with Year 3 children at Hilltop Primary School.
The team asked the children to design a poster to represent Road Safety – a very important topic on the school’s syllabus. After receiving 56 entries, the team and members from Medway Council, voted for the best design.
The winning poster was designed by Hilltop Primary School’s Lainey. Lainey was congratulated on stage by Kerby the Cone, VolkerHighways’ mascot, in front of her peers and awarded an Argos voucher. Other children who also entered the competition were given goodie bags, containing road safety signs, stickers, reflective keyring, pencils and a colouring in booklet.
Lainey’s design stands pride of place on one of VolkerHighways’ vans, where it will be used to carry out highway services across Medway Towns.
Road Safety Week is Brake’s biggest road safety campaign. Every year, thousands of schools, organisations and communities get involved to share important road safety messages.
Ewa Eddy, headteacher at Hilltop Primary School, said: “At Hilltop, we believe it is really important to ensure our children have access to a wide variety of learning. Having a good understanding of road safety is vital and we feel very lucky to have had the chance for our children to compete in this wonderful competition."
Sohail Hussain, project manager for VolkerHighways, said: “Road safety is close to our hearts at VolkerHighways, and we wanted to share our wisdom with Hilltop Primary School. We were very pleased that the school were eager to get involved and a very well done to Lainey.”
