Medway Council continues its collaboration with VolkerHighways, having awarded the company a new highways term maintenance contract. The contract will begin on 1 August 2017 and run for five years, with possible extensions of up to five further years.
The new contract comprises both planned and responsive maintenance, including carriageway and footway resurfacing, winter maintenance, drainage cleansing and road markings. VolkerHighways will also maintain Medway’s 26,000 street lighting columns and introduce professional services and consultancy support during the term of the contract. In addition, VolkerHighways will deliver maintenance and inspections in the Medway Tunnel, which accommodates approximately 40,000 vehicle journeys each day. These works will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption to the travelling public. Also included within the scope of highway infrastructure maintenance are ad hoc requirements for individual capital schemes which will improve and enhance the existing network.
VolkerHighways and Medway have collaborated on the council’s highway maintenance since 2007. During this time, approximately 650,000 square metres of carriageway and 145,000 square metres of footways have been resurfaced and 9,000 emergency response incidents completed.
Alistair Thompson, managing director of VolkerHighways said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract which continues our relationship with Medway Council for the next five, and hopefully 10 years. This provides a continuity of highway maintenance service to the residents and road users of Medway. We also look forward to strengthening our existing relationships across the council’s various communities.”
Councillor Phil Filmer, portfolio holder for frontline services at Medway Council, said: “Following a thorough tendering process, we were pleased to award the contract to VolkerHighways. They have provided us with a first-class highways maintenance service in the past and we look forward to continuing our work with them. It’s important that we look after roads in Medway to ensure the safe travel of residents and visitors.”
