Meet our people

Meet some of our people and find out what they have to say about the opportunities and personal experiences of being a VolkerHighways employee.

Andy Scotter

Position: Contract Manager

With nearly 25 years' experience of managing term maintenance contracts, Andy Scotter has been working as a Contract Manager for VolkerHighways since its amalgamation in 2009. Prior to the merger, Andy worked for John Crowley (Maidstone) Limited, one of the merging companies, for 20 years in the London area. Andy currently oversees the London Borough of Camden Term Maintenance Contract where he has been doing so for 10 years.

"VolkerHighways is a very good highways maintenance and projects business, and in the three years that it has been operating I have had the opportunity to work with some great people, mostly due to my involvement in the development of new technology that will improve the way we manage our business.

"My aim at present is to become a Senior Contracts Manager. I know that if my knowledge is lacking in any areas, VolkerHighways is supporting me in organising development and mentoring programmes to assist me."

Nick Rigby

Position: Quantity Surveyor

In 2007, Nick Rigby began his career as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor with Gabriel Contractors Ltd, one of the merging companies of VolkerHighways. Nick continued his education studying BSc Quantity Surveying with the support and training from VolkerHighways while working as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor. He now works in our Projects division as a Quantity Surveyor working with our project managers to manage the commercial side of awarded projects.

"I enjoy working for VolkerHighways and firmly believe that this is the best place for me to complete my training and progress my career. Everyone I have had the pleasure of working with has been friendly and approachable at all times and have encouraged me to progress at a pace that I feel comfortable with.

"I get to meet a lot of interesting people from a variety of backgrounds and have been privileged to work on some really interesting jobs. It's not often that I go home without feeling that I have accomplished something in a day's work."

Steve Wells

Position: Area Surveyor

Steve Wells works for VolkerHighways as an Area Surveyor for the North London Contracts offering support and advice to teams working in the area. In 2002, Steve first joined Fitzpatrick Contractors Ltd, one of the founding companies of VolkerWessels UK, as a Storeman. In 10 years, Steve quickly progressed to Measurement Engineer, Trainee Quantity Surveyor and then to Assistant Project Quality Surveyor for our Enfield Term Maintenance Contract before settling in his current position.

"VolkerWessels UK are an excellent organisation to work for. Since I transferred over to them in 2002 I have been given training opportunities to allow me to develop a career that I both enjoy and am proud of.

"I stumbled into Highways Maintenance by accident. Being 44 years old now and beginning along this path only 11 years ago, I felt like the oldest trainee in the land. I don't imagine that many organisations would have given me the opportunities that VolkerHighways did. I am very grateful to have been given the chance."
