VolkerHighways worked closely with designers, to construct the new bus station with its historic surroundings in mind, mirroring the architecture of local features such as the town library and museum.

The works consisted of constructing concrete bus parking bays, surfaced running areas and a bespoke passenger waiting facility made from galvanised steel, glass screens and Iroko hardwood; a high-specification, African material with an attractive, golden-brown finish.

The station was completed with Iroko hardwood benches and soft landscaping around the waiting facility, as well as block paved pedestrian areas and LED street lighting throughout the site.

In addition, the team installed a new drainage system, containing an oil interceptor system to ensure any contaminated liquids are collected prior to leaving the station.

Located in the centre of Newbury, the bus station will be a prominent meeting place for residents and visitors alike, for years to come. It also makes way for the redevelopment of the old bus station and Kennet Shopping Centre, providing new business and housing opportunities for the area.

Nick Carter, Chief Executive of West Berkshire Council said: "These are exciting but busy times for Newbury. Fifteen years ago we came together to develop the Newbury Vision and we've come a long way since then. We're delivering some really exciting projects for the town and both residents and businesses tell us that they are feeling the tangible benefits of these.

"All of these improvements are key to realising the Newbury Vision 2026 which was created to ensure Newbury's future as a great place to live, visit and work.”

The opening ceremony was conducted by Jeanette Clifford, West Berkshire’s executive member for highways and transport, environment and countryside and Rt Hon Richard Benyon, MP for Newbury.
