In addition to the ongoing works under the council’s Highway Management and Maintenance contract, the team has taken on additional responsibilities in order to ensure that the borough is looking its best for the big day.

Since February, over twenty individual schemes have been undertaken, including traffic improvement measures such as junction improvements, upgraded pedestrian crossings and signals, resurfacing schemes including outside Windsor Castle and street cleansing in association with Urbaser.

The team are also re-painting street furniture, repairing paved footpaths and providing resources to cover cleaning and highway works that may arise before, during and after the wedding.

Daron Mizen, project manager for VolkerHighways’ Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead contract, said: “We are pleased to be working with the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, providing the resources and additional supervision required to complete works ahead of the royal wedding in Windsor this May. Our teams and key suppliers are doing a great job, expertly working to complete all tasks.”

A local Eton community group have praised the team’s work, as they installed a plaque marking the start of the new Eton Walkway, stretching from Eton College to Windsor: “We are absolutely delighted that VolkerHighways has installed the plaque for the community; thank you very much.”

Cllr Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for highways, transport and Windsor at the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, said: “We are delighted to be able to welcome the world to Windsor to enjoy the royal wedding and have worked hard with partners like VolkerHighways to ensure the whole town, including the roads, are at their best.

By bringing forward these pre-planned works we are able to ensure Windsor is ready for the world’s eyes and leave the lasting benefit of improved highways for residents, businesses and future visitors.”
