VolkerHighways and the rail division of sister business, VolkerFitzpatrick, are bringing together their combined experience to replace the railway footbridge on Green Street in Medway, Kent.

The project, which is due to begin in March 2021 and to last for three months, will include installing temporary works access to the railway cutting to enable new bases for the footbridge to be prepared. A gap will be created between the existing bridge and footpath to create space to prepare and install the bank seats.

Once the preparation works are complete, the team will remove the old bridge and lift the new footbridge into position under rail possessions from Network Rail. Upon completion, the old bridge will be dismantled and removed from the local area. The new footbridge will be longer and wider than the previous structure, giving pedestrians more space to pass. The works are expected to be completed by the end of May 2021.

VolkerHighways, the Highways Infrastructure Contractor for Medway Council, has engaged VolkerFitzpatrick’s rail and infrastructure division to provide expertise at an early stage on the methodology, programming, possession planning and management of Network Rail’s requirements. The teams worked collaboratively to determine solutions for the replacement works. The project demonstrates the ability of the businesses within the VolkerWessels UK group to collaborate, bringing together their specialist skills and capabilities to deliver complex works.

Alistair Thompson, managing director for VolkerHighways said: “We are thrilled to be able to extend our work for Medway Council. The collaborative efforts and specialist skills of VolkerHighways and VolkerFitzpatrick’s rail and infrastructure division will ensure the works run smoothly and efficiently for the communities of Medway.”

Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Frontline Services, said: “I am pleased that work is due to begin on the footbridge in Green Street, Gillingham. The new bridge will be wider which will make it easier for pedestrians and wheelchair users to pass others and new lighting will be installed. I look forward to seeing the works progress.”
