Brought to Luton by Keech Hospice Care, the trail is free to attend and people of all ages are encouraged to take part, by spotting all the elephants. Each elephant has been uniquely decorated by an artist and sponsored by a business.

Both VolkerFitzpatrick and VolkerHighways have strong, long-standing relationships with the borough, delivering ongoing highway maintenance and large-scale infrastructure projects.

The VolkerFitzpatrick-Kier JV is currently delivering the construction of the new Luton DART fast transit system, whilst VolkerHighways has been working in Luton for over a decade and is currently delivering Luton Borough Council’s Highway Maintenance, Major Projects and Professional Services contract.

The two businesses have chosen to jointly sponsor ‘On The Ele-Frontline’ by artist Sandra Webster, who has painted the elephant in a stunning mix of rainbow colours, as a dedication to the NHS.

As a part-time staff nurse, Sandra was inspired to create this design after witnessing the commitment and hard work of frontline workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Deon Scholtz, operations director for VolkerFitzpatrick, said: “We’re proud to be sponsoring an elephant in this year’s Big Trunk Trail and supporting Keech Hospice’s vital work. I’m sure the event will be very popular with locals and visitors alike.”

Matt Joel, project manager for VolkerHighways, said: “It’s great to see so much excitement in the lead up to this year’s trail. Our teams work throughout the borough every day and events like this bring a lot of fun and colour to the town.”

On 11 November, after the event has come to a close, a minimum of 30 elephant sculptures will be auctioned, to raise money for Keech Hospice Care.
