As part of their work with Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, VolkerHighways recently held a competition, to have local school pupils name six of their fleet of winter gritters.

Six schools and their students suggested a wide variety of creative names. After a lot of deliberation, the winning names were chosen:

  • Gritta Garbo
  • Usain Salt
  • I’m a Gritter Get Me Out of Here
  • Salty
  • Lightning
  • Grit Vader

As well as seeing their name printed on one of the six VolkerHighways gritters, the schools also received book vouchers and goody bags, to celebrate their success.

Daron Mizen, project manager for VolkerHighways, said: “These types of events are a great way for us to engage with the local community and meet some of the people who use the road networks we maintain each day. The children suggested some fantastic names and I look forward to seeing them in action on our winter fleet.”

Sarah Plowman, senior commissioning officer (highways and transport) for Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, said: “All six school visits were a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all the children. Thank you to the VolkerHighways team for all your help with running this competition.”
