Resurfacing works successfully delivered in challenging London location

VolkerHighways recently completed a resurfacing project to reprofile Charing Cross Road and Denmark Street in London, on behalf of Camden Council.

The works were required due to carriageway depression whereby localised pavement surface areas have slightly lower elevations than the surrounding pavement, often causing the area to fill with water.

The project was completed across seven shifts and involved profile planing, laying of road base, binder and surface course. To set the surface to new levels, the team rebuilt 60 individual pieces of ironworks. To complete the works, the team applied new road markings.

This was a testing project for the team due to its busy location, pedestrian and vehicular management, as well as the design, access and egress. The existing and proposed new road levels proved challenging, with the levels ranging from minus 10mm to plus 260mm from the existing carriageway. However, thanks to VolkerHighways’ vast experience and collaboration with the council, the works were delivered successfully.

Jak Edwards, VolkerHighways’ surfacing contracts manager, said: “We are delighted to have completed this very challenging project for our long-standing client, Camden Council. Charing Cross Road and Denmark Street no longer have potholes and carriageway depression, providing a much better-quality ride for motorists and commuters.”
