VolkerWessels UK is supporting the UK Contractors Group (UKCG), and its partners (Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), Construction News and the Scottish Contractors Group) on its recently launched ‘Born To Build' campaign.
Attracting and retaining talent is the construction industry's biggest challenge today. We have an ageing workforce, falling apprenticeship completions and with just 12 per cent of the construction workforce female, we have a significant diversity issue too. The industry needs to recruit 182,000 new workers over the next five years if we are to deliver forecast sector growth and the resulting benefits to the UK economy.
The ‘Born To Build' campaign is targeting young people between the ages of 14 and 19,
to challenge outdated perceptions of what is now a dynamic, exciting industry at the forefront of technological innovation. Primarily focussed on social media, it aims to provide an opportunity for young people to find out more about the range of career choices within construction and to hear directly from those already enjoying successful careers in the industry.
Two of VolkerWessels UK's young professionals are also taking part in the campaign. Dan Moran, senior engineer at VolkerFitzpatrick, and Tamara Denn, trainee quantity surveyor at VolkerFitzpatrick, are explaining why they chose a career in construction by sharing their real life profiles. In blogs and tweets they will be giving a personal insight into how they got into the industry, their ambitions and why construction is exciting.
