Wharf Road Bus Station

West Berkshire

As part of our ongoing contract with West Berkshire Council, VolkerHighways undertook a project to construct a new bus station on Wharf Road, Newbury.

Located in the centre of Newbury, the bus interchange is a key transport hub for the town and connects local residents to the surrounding areas.

To enable us to produce high quality, bespoke projects such as this, VolkerHighways worked closely with designers, to construct the new bus station whilst taking into consideration its historic surroundings. This involved mirroring the architecture of local features such as the town library and museum.

  • Designed and constructed with historic surroundings in mind
  • Concrete bus parking bays
  • Surfaced running areas
  • Bespoke passenger waiting facility made from galvanised steel, glass screens and Iroko hardwood
  • Iroko hardwood benches and soft landscaping around the waiting facility
  • Block paved pedestrian areas
  • LED street lighting
  • New drainage system, containing an oil interceptor system

"We're delivering some really exciting projects for the town and both residents and businesses tell us that they are feeling the tangible benefits of these. All of these improvements are key to realising the Newbury Vision 2026 which was created to ensure Newbury's future as a great place to live, visit and work."

Nick Carter, Chief Executive of West Berkshire Council
