In 2011, VolkerHighways instigated and developed its own behavioural change programme, named ‘Protect our People’.
Following the success of the programme, Protect our People is now being taken to the next level, with a fresh approach.
The new Protect our People will follow the format of VolkerFitzpatrick’s highly successful programme, ‘Plan, Attitude, Lead, Share’ (PALS). PALS is delivered in a series of modules to increase awareness of HSEQ and influence positive safety behaviours within the highways world.
VolkerHighways ‘safety champions’, will provide quarterly modular briefings to staff and supply chain partners. These will recognise the importance of leading by example and will focus on ways to influence the workforce, to ensure that safety behaviours are of the highest standard.
The VolkerHighways Health and Safety Policy is a declaration of our commitment to develop a safe and healthy working environment. Our health and safety system is third party accredited to the standards of British Standard Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Services (BS OHSAS), who have issued us with a ‘BS OHSAS 18001:2007’ certificate.

Our Health and Safety Environment and Quality (HSEQ) performance has received numerous accolades, including Green Apple Environmental Awards, as well as awards from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
We regularly review our performance standards to ensure that these are maintained to the highest level. We do this by continually monitoring compliance and benchmarking our performance through an established audit and inspection regime. This is undertaken by both external parties and our own team of safety, health and environmental professionals. The findings are reviewed at the highest level and where necessary, changes are made to ensure continual improvement.
VolkerHighways is committed to providing the best possible environment for our operations to be carried out safely and with the least impact on the local environment. We expect and encourage cooperation from our entire workforce in creating a better, safer and more responsible safety culture on site.
It is our aim to influence the way people operate in and outside of work, for improved wellbeing, work safety, and to ensure they return home safely to their families at the end of every day.
