Safety first, always

You can rest assured knowing that at VolkerHighways, we are leading by example, going above and beyond standard safety processes, to provide a safe environment for our employees, members of the public, and for all our stakeholders. It all goes towards creating a happy and productive workforce, that our clients can be proud to stand alongside.

Our people are at the heart of what we do, and that is why we have brought in a number of initiatives including:

Protect our People

To go above and beyond industry guidelines and policies, VolkerHighways’ behavioural change programme, ‘Protect our People’, was created to empower our workforce, to help change the way we work to achieve improved health, safety and wellbeing in the workplace.

VolkerHighways’ Protect our People Champions are trained to deliver regular, modular briefings to employees, clients and supply chain partners, to ensure that safety is always at the front of our minds. The modules cover topics including:

  • Mental health
  • Diet and physical wellbeing
  • Risk perception
  • Driving awareness
  • Fatigue

Protect our People Champions recognise the importance of leading by example and focus on ways to influence the workforce. The champions deliver interactive, open and honest discussions that aim to find solutions from within.

Between 2013-2020, our close call frequency rate has increased from 2.05 to 142.63, showing that concerns on site are being reported and resolved before they escalate. As close calls are reported by our operatives, it shows that they are engaging and being proactive, showing our can-do attitude and demonstrating an empowered workforce.

Our initiatives are proving to be successful as our accident frequency rate has decreased significantly, in the same period.

Mental Health Champions

VolkerWessels UK has over 100 Mental Health Champions who are trained and supported by Mental Health England to listen with care to employees’ individual issues in confidence and direct them to professionals (where appropriate).

Our health and safety system is independently verified by the British Standards Institution (BSI) who have issued us with BS EN ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management accreditation.

Benchmarking to continually improve our performance

We regularly review our performance standards to ensure that these are maintained to the highest level. We do this by continually monitoring compliance and benchmarking our performance through an established audit and inspection regime. This is undertaken by both external parties and our own team of safety, health, quality and environmental professionals. The findings are reviewed at the highest level and, where necessary, changes are made to ensure continual improvement.

Our promise

It is our aim to influence the way people operate in and outside of work, for improved wellbeing, and work safety, and to ensure they return home safely to their families at the end of every day.
