VolkerHighways moving forward with sustainable highways

Recent

VolkerHighways has started a trial of the new Sustainable Highways Maintenance Tool (SHMT) to further improve its sustainability record on its term maintenance contracts. The tool, designed by the Highways Term Maintenance Association (HTMA), aims to address how road maintenance can be managed to meet the social, economic, and ecological needs of present and future generations.

VolkerHighways will trial the scheme in phases, initially starting with the works currently being carried out at St James' Gateway. After analysing the results of this preliminary trial, VolkerHighways will develop the processes for implementing the full version into their standard practice in 2013.

The SHMT guidelines are aligned with the government's sustainable development priorities as well as VolkerHighways' own sustainability policy. They cover the following key areas: sustainable consumption and production, climate change and energy, natural resource protection and environmental enhancement, and sustainable communities.

Peter Hyde, managing director at VolkerHighways, said: "VolkerHighways is trialling the HTMA sustainability highways maintenance tool to help us further measure, understand and reduce the carbon usage and environmental impact of our works.

"We are already committed to best practice in sustainability. We have spent many years developing innovative working practices, as well as opening our own recycling plants. We hope this tool will help us to continually improve our processes and challenge the way we work."
