VolkerHighways’ Kerby the cone visited children at Millfields Children’s Centre in Hackney to support Road Safety Week.

As part of the VolkerHighways and London Borough of Hackney ‘Protect Our People’ safety awareness campaign, Kerby spoke to children and parents about the importance of cones on the roads. This was the third annual visit to Millfields School for Road Safety Week, where the children learned what a cone is and how to approach road works in a safe manner.

Tilishia Green, community development worker at Millfields Children’s Centre said of the event: “The children in our day care rooms are now very aware of the importance of the cones on our roads, and understand that the cones are a warning that Kerby is at work on something on the streets. The visit was fun and informative, and feedback from the parents was outstanding.”

“The continued support that Kerby provides to Millfields Children’s Centre during Road Safety Week is tremendous.”

Kerby also visited Twydall Primary School, in partnership with Medway Council. Kerby helped the school carry out cycle training, creating a road layout using cones for the children to cycle within.

Andy Scotter, senior contract manager for VolkerHighways, said:

“On the day of the visit I was joined by Councillor Phil Filmer and Jason Malloy from Medway’s Highways Department. The children were so excited to be riding their bikes, carts and scooters around the new cones spurred on by Kerby the cone.”

“I received a nice thank you letter from the head teacher and the children gave me a lovely poster that they had made, which sits proudly on my office wall.”

“Community engagement and helping others gives you a good feeling inside, and it does not always have to cost the earth.”
