Richmond Playbuilder

The project comprised the installation of 11 bespoke playgrounds throughout the London Borough of Richmond, each containing a combination of manufactured and natural play features.

The works included the installation of bespoke play features such as glacial boulders, timber stepping logs/climbing poles, skate park, BMX cycle track, living willow maze, bridges, timber decking, timber retaining walls, dry river bed and tiered sports amphitheatre.

The manufactured play equipment ranged from nest swings, suspension bridges and climbing structures to crawl tunnels, balancing beams and a wheelchair seesaw.

Surfacing such as Tiger Mulch', wet-pour rubber, ‘Smart-Grass' matting and play sand was used to improve the safety of the play areas.

In addition to the above, the project included soft landscaping and the construction of flexible surfaces such as asphalt and self binding gravel.  This was complemented with concrete kerbs and edges made of timber and cobbles to finish.

VolkerHighways controlled and operated the project from their highways works depot in Twickenham. This is where the contract material/plant storage, waste transfer, site office and main welfare facilities were located.
